A summer storm comes apart over Vancouver and two people go out onto the covered porch of a 1910 corner store to meet it. The Sky Smoked Back is fifty-six seconds of that night: bruised purple cloud closing in, white lightning branching overhead, two faces in joyful awe, and thunder as the thing that actually moves the film — approaching from a distance, then wrapping the porch entirely.
